Women’s Hair Loss Treatment

About 30% of all women experience hair loss

Hair loss is often seen as a problem affecting only men, but that’s far from the truth. Approximately 30% of women experience hair loss, with the rate rising significantly for women over 50. Despite these numbers, hair loss can feel deeply personal, often leading to feelings of embarrassment and isolation. At DiStefano Hair Restoration Centers, our team is highly skilled in diagnosing the underlying causes of hair loss and creating personalized treatment plans to help you achieve a thicker, fuller head of hair as quickly as possible.

We prioritize uncovering the root cause of your hair loss in every case. This ensures your treatment plan is not only effective but also provides long-lasting, permanent results.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

First, let’s define hair loss. While it’s normal to lose and regrow hair, true hair loss occurs when you shed more than 125 hairs per day or lost hair is not replaced. Unlike male pattern baldness, which is almost always a genetic condition, women’s hair loss can be triggered by a number of factors. These include (but are not limited to):

Research indicates that with proper education and timely intervention, women’s hair loss can often be reversed through surgical, non-surgical treatments, or a combination of both. No matter the cause of your hair loss, we will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to your unique needs.

Women's Hair Loss Treatment Options

The first step to addressing your hair loss is to identify its cause. At DiStefano Hair Restoration Centers, it all begins with a confidential consultation. You will meet with an expert consultant who will work with you to evaluate your hair loss condition and determine whether it is related to genetics or your overall health. Based on these findings, a hair loss restoration doctor will help create a customized treatment plan. There are many options out there for treatment, and we will help you determine which plan will work best for you.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Women's Hair Loss

If your hair loss is not caused by genetics, our doctors may recommend any number of non-surgical options to help restore your hair to its full potential. Non-surgical treatments include:

Nutritional Counseling

What we eat (or don’t eat) affects all systems in our body, including hair. Sudden, extreme weight loss, protein deficiency, and anemia are just a few factors that may cause excessive, prolonged hair shedding. The good news? In most cases, this is temporary. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most women can stop the loss of hair completely.

Vitamin Supplements

Vitamin deficiencies that are likely to lead to women’s hair loss include iron, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium. Our expert doctors can test for vitamin deficiencies and prescribe supplements to help restore your body’s balance and stimulate growth.

Medications

For many types of hair loss, prescription medications may be needed to stop further loss and stimulate new growth. But when it comes to medications, be cautious; there are plenty of expensive hair treatments out there which do not actually provide value. Only a physician trained in hair loss can help you sort out the myths from legitimate treatments for hair loss.

LaserCap

The LaserCap women’s hair loss treatment uses Low-Level-Laser Therapy (LLLT) to re-energize inactive hair follicles. Red laser light is absorbed by specialized cells deep within the follicle, providing energy to enhance cellular respiration and hair growth. As a result, follicles become awakened from their inactive state and produce thicker, healthier hair. The LaserCap conveniently fits into any hat, allowing for easy, discreet treatment wherever you go.

Topical Solutions

Prescription and non-prescription topical solutions have also been shown to help reduce hair loss in women. At DiStefano, we offer three topical women’s hair loss treatment options:

Formula 82M contains Minoxidil (5%), Tretinoin, a topical steroid, and other proprietary ingredients that improve the formula’s overall effectiveness, stability and usability. Its higher strength of Minoxidil, addition of Retinoic Acid, and proprietary solubilizing and stabilizing process provides a more effective product with a longer shelf life.
Formula 82F, also known as Finoxidil, is a topical compounded prescription solution containing the FDA-approved hair growth medication Finasteride. Formula 82F contains Minoxidil (5%), Finasteride (.25%), a topical steroid to improve efficacy and reduce irritation, and a mixture of other proprietary ingredients.
PhytoFoamRX, compounded with TrichoFoam™, is an alcohol-free and propylene glycol-free foam vehicle for water-soluble and some liposoluble actives. Our blend contains Latanoprost, Minoxidil, and Spironolactone. This compound is clinically proven to help thicken hair and stop loss.

Women's Hair Loss Surgical Treatments

If our consultant determines that your hair loss is caused by genetics, a doctor will work with you to develop the best hair transplant procedure for your profile. Surgical hair transplant options include:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

This is the more traditional method of surgical treatment. In Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedure, a strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head and sutured, leaving a very small scar. Follicular units are harvested from this “donor area” and implanted into areas that are not growing hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The Follicular Unit Extraction process is less invasive than FUT and provides long-lasting results. In an FUE procedure, each follicular unit is removed individually from the back of the head and implanted in the area in need of growth. The process leaves no scar.
