Hair Transplant Procedures by Dr. DiStefano

Performed by the DiStefano Hair Transplant Center, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a method of hair transplant surgery where hair is restored exclusively in its naturally occurring, individual follicular units. These follicular units are made up of one, two, three or four hairs in each follicle.

This technique was an advance that began in the 1990’s when hair transplant surgeons switched from moving plugs of about 10 to 25 hairs. The older hair replacement method resulted in an unnatural appearance, which was much less authentic than the new FUT hair replacement technique.

The Process

FUT hair restoration begins with a meeting between the physician and patient to decide where the new growth should be and how much hair will be transplanted.

The FUT transplant procedure for removing and dividing up the hair into natural-looking groupings is as follows:

  • The surgeon makes a small incision at the back of the head, from where he takes the hair that will be transplanted
  • The doctor cuts out a strip of hair follicles
  • The follicles are divided into natural-looking units containing from one to three or four hairs
  • Working using microscopes, a team divides the hair into these natural-looking groupings
  • These grouping are re-implanted in areas on the top, front and sides of the head as thickly as is possible to allow them to grow back in a healthy manner. If transplanted too thickly, some of the hair will not live.

The surgeon uses a fine needle to create sites at the sides, top and front of the head where the transplants will be inserted. The DiStefano Hair Transplant Center uses a team of surgeons to implant the hair to minimize the time it takes. The patient receives a topical anesthetic, which enables the procedure to be practically painless.

Following the Procedure

When the FUT hair implant is complete, we will explain proper homecare. Part of the healing process involves the shedding of small scabs from the places where the hair was transplanted. This takes from about five to seven days, after which patients can begin to treat their hair as they usually do.

Within approximately ten days, the surgeon can begin to remove the stitches that remain at the sites from where the transplanted hair was removed. The thin line left after the stitches are removed is covered by the patient’s hair and thus does not show.
