Men's Hair Loss

Some men find hair loss very distressing. When men lose their hair, their self-esteem may drop, they may feel self-conscious and inept in social situations, and they may even have a hard time finding a job because they tend to look older.

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness describes how most men lose their hair. A man may notice his hairline receding and the hair on the crown of his head thinning. Over time:

  • the hair follicle shrinks
  • the hair in the follicle becomes shorter and finer
  • the follicle continues to exist, but without hair

Male pattern baldness progresses until a u-shaped pattern of hair remains around the sides of the head and the back of the scalp.

The Life Cycle of Hair

In healthy people, hair grows and is lost in a regular cycle, which has three main stages:

  • Anagen — Hair is in a phase of active hair growth during this stage. Of the three stages of hair growth, this is the longest. Up to 90 percent of the hair follicles on the scalp are in the anagen phase at any one time. The hair in this phase lasts between three and six years.
  • Catagen — This is a much shorter stage of hair life. The hair follicle in this phase, which is characterized by controlled regression, lasts from 14 to 21 days.
  • Telogen — Called the resting state, this stage lasts from 30 to 90 days. About 10 percent of the scalp's hair follicles are in this stage. After hair in the telogen phase falls out in this final stage of hair growth, the cycle begins again.
